Charroux is a medieval, artisanal village that was once fortified. It's the only one in the department to be listed among "The Most Beautiful Villages of France." Come explore the cobbled streets, the 14th-century half-timbered house, the ancient gates, the church, the wells, and more.
Charroux is a lively and dynamic village! The year is punctuated by many highlights: Jema, a flea market, an artists’ and artisans’ fair, a soup festival, and a Christmas market.
Not to mention the many artists and artisans who welcome you into their shops and contribute to the village’s authentic character.
Charroux boasts a beautiful 12th-century church, carved facades from the 15th and 18th centuries, and a circular layout stemming from its past as a fortified town. Granted the status of a free town in 1245, Charroux was home to a bourgeois population of wealthy merchants and intellectuals. The street names evoke the bustling life of that era, while a tour takes you to the Porte d’Orient, the Porte de l’Horloge and its belfry (13th–14th centuries), the 19th-century market hall, and the village’s oldest house, dating from the 14th century. The belvedere and the “Chaume du Vent” viewpoint offer panoramic views of the Bourbonnais plain and the Auvergne volcanic range on clear days.
Also be sure to visit the Museum of Charroux and Its Canton, which, across 14 rooms (yes, 14!), traces the village’s entire history from the Middle Ages through the 20th century through archival documents, artifacts from Charroux’s heritage, a model of the medieval town, and workshops showcasing traditional crafts.
