Description

Charroux is a medieval, artisanal village that was once fortified. It's the only one in the department to be listed among "The Most Beautiful Villages of France." Come explore the cobbled streets, the 14th-century half-timbered house, the ancient gates, the church, the wells, and more.
Charroux is a lively and dynamic village! Many highlights punctuate the year: Jema, flea market, artists and artisans gathering, soup festival, Christmas market. Not to mention the multitude of artists and craftsmen who welcome you into their shops and contribute to the village's authenticity. Charroux boasts a beautiful 12th-century church, sculpted facades from the 15th and 18th centuries, and a circular layout due to its past as a fortified town. Having become a free town in 1245, Charroux had a bourgeois population of wealthy merchants and intellectuals. The street names evoke the active life of the time, while a visit reveals the Porte d'Orient, the Porte de l'Horloge and its belfry (13th-14th centuries), the 19th-century market hall, and the oldest house in the village, dating back to the 14th century. The belvedere and the Chaume du Vent viewpoint offer views of the Bourbonnaise plain and the Auvergne volcano chain on clear days. Also discover the Charroux and its Canton Museum, which presents the entire history of the village from the Middle Ages to the 20th century in 14 rooms (yes, 14!), thanks to archival documents, elements of Charleroi's heritage, a model of the medieval town, and workshops of old trades. Self-guided tours are available year-round with a tourist map or audio guide upon request at the Tourist Office. Guided tour: for groups by reservation all year round, for individuals every Wednesday morning at 11 a.m. in July and August on request at the Tourist Office. An unusual sight to see in Charroux: one of the six replicas made by the production company of the world-famous series Game of Thrones. For €2, take a photo of yourself on the Iron Throne installed on the terrace of the Galerie F. Lassere et Kitschinette. All proceeds are donated annually to charity. Don't hesitate to meet our artists and artisans in Charroux: they will be delighted to share their expertise with you! Take a break to admire the panoramic views from the belvedere and the orientation table at La Chaume du Vent.
